Birmingham Wheels - Saturday 11 May 2002

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars - 2L Bangers - Stock Rods - Street Stox

Report and pictures by Dave Carter.

Another busy meeting with 140 or so racecars in the pits. There were nearly 70 F2s present which necessitated a change to the meeting programme to allow for two consolation events and the Bangers too attracted a good field for their Midland Championship. A very early incident was the rollover by F2 Star Mick Sworder (see picture), one of four rollovers that took place during the evening. There was a serious incident in the F2 Grand National when #665 Richard Bruton was launched sky-high up the infield banking in an incident on the start straight and appearing to land nose-first onto the centre. Red flags resulted and the roof had to be removed from the car to extract Richard. It is certain that everyone at the meeting will wish to send their best wishes to Richard following this crash.

In terms of the F2 results the first three races went to the star drivers and it was Mike Marr who broke the red top stranglehold in the second consolation using his last years car with new suspension courtesy of Rebels supremo Hans Kirimaa (see pics). In the Grand Final Andy Maynard held off to beat Barry Goldin.

The Bangers saw some lively action throughout the evening left #54 Richard 'Bandit' Hayward as the Midland Champion and Buster Godden as the victor in the DD.

The novelty starts in the Street Stox Final usually throw up the odd surprise but the effect this time takes some beating as both #100 Deka and #167 Paul Motherwell went into reverse as part of their long running feud! Even though they both lost more than a lap they still finished second and third respectively.

In the Stock Rods there was another good field and fast tight racing which is now the norm for this formula although a few dockings had to be issued in respect of the contact.

This was a fine meeting apart from the driver injury in the F2 Grand National.
