Birmingham Wheels - Saturday 16 March

NATIONAL HOT RODS - BriSCA F2 STOCK CARS - LEGENDS

With loads of fantastic machinery in each class this combination of formulae cannot be bettered and with a dry track there was super-competitive action in all three classes throughout the evening. This was a great session to kick off the INCARACE season.

Race Report for the Legends by Peggyann Lilley

A race 1, heat 1, first corner incident opened the season for Legends at Birmingham Wheels on Saturday night. The sprint into the first bend caused Alan Lilley (475) and Daniel Rutterford (4), however, to retire. The field settled down to some fine racing. Steve Dakin (99) pulled out a commanding lead with John Drury (97) and Ian Hales (6) chasing. Richard Brown (482) was unfortunate to catch the barrier on the finish line which launched the car onto its roof. He slid along the rest of the straight and finally stopped on the corner. The strength of these cars became evident as Richard soon climbed out to the delight of all watching. The race was won by Steve Dakin followed by Ian Hales and Derek Hales (8).

Heat 2 saw Jason Cooper (11) take the lead into lap 2. Steve Dakin and Daniel Rutterford locked wheels. Happily neither suffered any harm. Jason raced on impressively to win with Steve and Daniel taking second and third.

Going into the final Jason and Steve lead the way again. The next pack was lead by Craig Phillips (24) and Des Chandler (1). On their tail Ian Hales and Daniel Rutterford battled it out but were held back by a tussle on turn 4. Newcomer, Stuart Whalley (39) spun, Pete Jenkins (5) got through but it left Stuart facing oncoming traffic. The 'yellows' came out and thankfully Stuart rejoined the race. With five laps to go Craig had moved closer to the leading pair and the final results went to first Jason Cooper, second Steve Dakin and Craig Phillips third.

The Legends have come of age with 21 drivers registered. The Wheels Stadium produced 18 starters - this being the most impressive field to date and what an impression they made with the spectators too!
