Oval Track Legends Championship Round #1 - Birmingham Wheels - Saturday 5 April 2003

Reporting by Peggyann Lilley.  Pictures by Dave Carter and Peggyann Lilley [PL]

Alpine - Spnsors of Legends Round #1

Stuart Whalley (39) was back on form in the opening round of the 2003 Oval Track Legends series at Birmingham Wheels on 5th April. The Staffordshire man won the first two heats - taking the lead in the early stages of heat 1 and led from the halfway mark in heat 2.

The third heat was a flag to finish win for Brian Barlow (9). In the first few laps he pulled out quite a gap only to see it filled by 2002 Points Champion Des Chandler (1). On the final lap Barlow hung onto his lead depite an 'over the line' challenge from Chandler.

The effect of Whalley's heat wins earnt him pole position for the 21 car final. He made a bad start due to having no grip and slipped down the field. Unknown to him, his tyres had picked up oil and water on the formation lap. Other heat winner Barlow, started second on the grid and he got away in a bit of a slide but was leading out of the first corner. After another lap Chandler had taken the lead and looked set to win. He was first over the line, but customary post race checks carried out on the first three cars home found that the number 1 car was 'too short' and had to be excluded from the result. So the race win went to second man over the line Steve Dakin (99). Pete Jenkins (5) came second and Barlow third. Points from the final had to be re-allocated putting Dakin ahead in the 2003 Points Chart at this early stage.
