Taylor Lampp has
dominated Adult Ministocks at Wanganui this season with each visit
(and there have been many) normally resulting in at least one win
per meeting. On Sunday afternoon he put that all together in a
consistent effort to take out the West Coast Adult Ministock Champs.
This was excellent reward for a driver that religiously supports
Eastside Auto Recyclers Oceanview Speedway.
West Coast Ministock Champs
Local Ministock numbers have been thin this year so it was no
surprise to see 7 locals outnumbered by the 9 Palmerston North & 6
Stratford visitors. 23V Kyle Taylor did however reappear after a
long absence and along with 45V Stuart Smith, 34V Ross Travers and
21V Dylan Brockway was expected to head the local challenge. The
Central Aluminium Team from Stratford always looks strong as do 35S
Carl Shearer and 71S Tony Shaw. And from Palmerston North there was
the ever consistent 99P Taylor Lampp, 9P Kurt Whiting and 49P Daniel
Gubb who know the track better than most
.
Heat One
The Stratford contingent were quickly in to their stride with 12S
Todd Duthie and 32S Mark Duthie snapping at the heels of early race
leader 23V Kyle Taylor. After holding off the attacks for most of
the heat, Taylor allowed the 12S car to slip around the outside in
lap 8 of 10. This threw the local off his stride and eventually he
faded to finish 4th behind the Duthies and 49P Daniel Gubb.
Heat Two
The wick was turned up in the 2nd heat as the combatants started to
get a little eager, which kept the referees busy. 22S Kerry Perrett
was getting a bit eager and his aggression took its' toll when he
broke his front right wheel - unfortunately his inability to steer
collected 21V Dylan Brockway, putting them both infield and out of
the contest. Up front 71S Tony Shaw was doing all he could to hold
off 12S Todd Duthie. Duthie threw everything at Shaw and only just
failed by the width of the front bumper to claim the heat win - it
was that close. Gubb will be crying in his beer after a last lap
spin put him out of the reckoning.
So after two heats, 12S Todd Duthie had a 5 point gap over Taylor
who in turn had a 4 point gap over 99P Taylor Lampp who had been
quietly going about his work. So the task for anybody trying to
catch Duthie was going to be difficult, although the Central
Aluminium man was starting well back on the grid in the decider.
Heat Three
45V Stuart Smith jumped out to an early lead off pole and was going
to be hard to peg back. Things were going to plan for Duthie as he
moved easily through the field but in lap 5 he smacked in to 66P
Hamish McLeod, which dropped him valuable placings. By lap 6 Lampp
and Duthie were equal on 54 points with 15P Matt Phippen two points
back. In to the last lap and Lampp looked like he had produced the
master plan by sneaking past Smith to take the vital points needed.
However a major altercation on the last lap saw half the field cross
under the chequered flag while half were stationery after the reds
were thrown. After debate amongst the referees it was decided to
declare the race after 9 laps - although Lampp dropped a point it
wasn't enough for Duthie to close the gap (even after the removal of
Phippen from the results after causing the last lap carnage). So
Lampp took the title by the one point from Duthie and Wanganui's
Taylor a further point back. Good stirring stuff.
Superstocks/Stockcars
The fields were mixed together with the 15V Doyle car being driven
by Ross Travers - complete with "L" plate -, 23V Scott Duncan, 45S
Steve Guilford and 35V Mick Paul being the Superstocks on show
(although Paul's car did not make the grid). The Flett boys, 79S
Shane Hurliman, 10P Josh Prentice and 71W Benji Sneddon added some
exotic flavour to the fields. Hurliman was keen to throw his car in
to anything that moved with he and Prentice exchanging blows in the
first race. 89V Blair Lockett is starting to attract a lot of
attention with 6V Dion Mooney showing a keenness to blunt the
rookie's season. Sneddon also looked to be enjoying himself landing
good blows on Lockett and 8V Malcom Barron in the 3rd race. The 3
races were taken out by the Superstocks with Travers clocking up a
win while the 45S car completed a double (with possibly Stuart Smith
behind the wheel at some point).
