Wanganui
West Coast Sidecar & Stockcar Champs
Saturday 29 March 2008
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard
An early cancellation meant that Wanganui's
last offering of the season became a triple feature; with the West Coast Sidecar &
Stockcar Champs being decided together with a Demolition Derby to round out the season.
The weather here was extremely dodgy; with persistent rain falling throughout a number of
races. However, the rain never became quite bad enough to cancel, and with the unfortunate
exception of the Sidecars, managed to complete the meeting.
Superstocks
#64p Kev Smith was reported in the local paper to be headed for Wellington, but the
weather gods put paid to Wellington, and so Kev and a few others turned up, even though
the Superstocks were not programmed.
In the 1st race #64p Smith finally got the better of #45v Steve Guilford in a race long
duel for third. But both were no match for the flying #94p Roydon Collingwood who finished
ahead of #282s Phil Ogle.
The 2nd heat saw #64p Smith battling wheel to wheel for a number of laps with #6v Dion
Mooney, before #6v Mooney decided that the best option was attack, as he slammed #64p
Smith into the wall. The Smith car seemingly disliked the taste of concrete as it then
retired to the centre green (and failed to show for the Grand Slam), as #6v Mooney
continued to place 4th behind the ever impressive #94p Collingwood.
