Team Kaos v Nu Generation
After a couple of support races, it was straight into the big one with the unbeaten Team
Kaos up against Nu Generation, who had fought their way through the eliminators. Lining up
for Kaos were; #90w Darren Hoskins, #91w Shane Hollow, #93w Derek Wanders (capt), #95w
Peter Banner, #96w Perry Barber and #97w Johnny Flaws. Gridding for Nu Generation are;
#32b Shovel Maulder, #35b Jonno Maulder, #36b Charlie Jones, #37b Carl Stevenson, #38b
Jock Jones (capt) and #39b James Churchward. Amazingly, after twelve x laps of fifteen,
all 10 x cars were still very much mobile, and there was nothing to choose between the two
teams. Every time it seemed as if one team was gaining the upper hand at one end of the
track, their opponents were gaining the advantage at the other end. It was only over the
last couple of laps that the Kamikaze hits were going in, and with cars becoming immobile,
superior numbers told in the end as Wellington's Team Kaos just kept on going, and
grinding out a superb victory, adding the NZ title to their North Island crown.
Following on from a series of both national and international events, it was decided to
mix things up a bit, with the "local" drivers having the opportunity to match
themselves against the international drivers. The first match up probably being the most
intriguing.
USA v Takapau Terrors
With only the USA having anything like a full compliment of cars from the destructive
international series, it was left to them alone to take on the mighty world power of the
Takapau Terrors! By now the rain had started to fall, and it was all about who could adapt
quickly to the conditions. Well i guess they're quick learners in Takapau, as it was they
who slithered their way to a most unlikely victory.
Dirty Rottens v Rest of World "B"
With the rain falling heavily, the support races were dropped, as the remaining
international cars were split into two groups, with the Dirty Rottens taking on the Rest
of the World "B". With the international element made up mainly Europeans, the
result was never in doubt. Being well used to racing in the rain, the representative side
cruised their way to the win.
New Zealand v Rest of the World
It's been quite a while since I've seen cars come down a pit chute in weather like this.
Usually in New Zealand if it starts to rain then everyone packs up and goes home. If it
had been any other formulae, I'm sure that's what would have happened here. But road cars
were designed with wet weather in mind, and despite the wettest racing conditions that
I've experienced over here, the cars slid their way around with great forward momentum. As
in the previous race, the race was never really in doubt, as the Kiwis' who despite making
a fist of it, were no match for their webbed footed counterparts!
