Swaffham - Monday 6 May 2002

I was attending this meeting as the travelling official for the Oval Legends Series in their first visit to an non-Incarace track of the season. This was also my first opportunity to visit Swaffham since its revamp under Spedeworth and very impressive it was too, with a lot of improvements to the racetrack with the levelling of the centre and upgrading of the safety angle in the new catch fencing and in some ways the most important of all - new creature comforts!

This was a tricky track for the Legends with the outside line proving particularly hairy. The line-ups are updated every meeting with the lower points scorers starting towards the front of the grid. The effect of was that some of the previous seasons top drivers moved towards the front of for this meeting including Derek Hales who responded with a very dominant hat-trick of racewins. As ever the racing was very competitive and the Legends were given a very warm reception from everyone at Swaffham.

The other formulae racing were the Stock Rods, Lightning Rods and 1600cc Bangers. There was some fine racing and in the Lightning Rods some controversy too!

Here is Peggyann Lilley's report on the Legends action:

Round 4 then for the Legends at Swaffham on Bank Holiday Monday and, like Hednesford the previous weekend, a local driver dominated.

Derek Hales (8) from nearby Foulden won all three races. His low points score to date mean't that, under Legends rules, he would have to start towards the front of the field. Once ahead of the opposition he pulled out three very commanding leads.

Hard and fast battles were won and lost throughout the day. Undeterred Daniel Rutterford (4) found room to overtake on the outside and move up to finish 2nd in the first heat. Paul Fiore (516) defended lap after lap his second place in heat two and Alan Lilley (475) was determined to hold onto his second place finish in the final. Trevor James (7) worked hard for similar success by finishing third in heat two and the final.
