Stockcar Teams Race - Stratford Stormers v Wanganui Vulcans
Pictures and reporting by Mike Pollard
The Vulcans are holders of the Stratford v
Wanganui Challenge Trophy, but it was a very new team that emerged through the pit gate to
take on a strong looking Stratford side.
With the season yet to start in Wanganui, the team of five had no fewer than three members
making their debut. In contrast, the Stormers took to the track with seven black bodied
beauties ready to do battle. After a couple of warm up laps the Stratford manager decided
it would be #39s Michel Willemsen and #43s Dave Maxwell that would be left on the bench.
Vulcan debutant #22v Tony James lined up on pole and got an immediate introduction to
teams racing, as #510s Jay Knight's foot must have missed the brake when lining up behind
and sent #22v James halfway to the first bend!
Undeterred, it was #22v James who made a run for it at the green chased by fellow front
rower #226s Blair Luscombe.
The lead lasted for a couple of laps until #22v James came across fellow debutant and
teammate #66v Steve Read. #66v Read had been tangling with #124s Andrew Dodunski and in
his own words: "I saw a black car in the mirror, and a second or two later I felt
someone on my outside". Another second later and #66v Read delivered a huge hit to
#22v James, sending him careering up the wall to the huge delight of the Stratford
One lap later and #44v Ian Barron is well and truly pummelled into the wall by a joint
assault from #510s Jay Knight and brother Chris in car #509s, ripping out the right rear
wheel of #44v Barron.
#124s Dodunski, #226s Luscombe and #517s Mark Woods formed a rolling road block, whilst
#509s Chris Knight set about #55v Richard Black and #510s Jay Knight dealt the finishing
blow to #66v Read.
#510s Jay Knight was driving like a man posessed and also managed to end the hopes of
black after tearing the wheel guard off the #55v machine.
At 4 v 2 it was all over for Wanganui. As early leader #22v James suffered a heavy hit
from #124s Dodunski. Last man standing for the Vulcans; #11v Malcolm Barron was pinned to
the wall by #509s Chris Knight, and it was left to #517s Woods to take the chequered in an
emphatic victory for the Stratford Stormers.
