Stockcar teams - Stratford Stormers vs Wanganui Vulcans
Pictures by & reporting by Mike
Boxing Day sees the holiday season underway
with nine consecutive days of racing (weather permitting), as Stratford rolls out the big
rigs, together with a Stockcar Teams race and Demolition Derby before a large and
Stratford Stormers v Wanganui Vulcans
Stratford were coming of a win at Kihikihi, whilst Wanganui were on a losing streak that
showed no signs of ending soon.
Things looked to be going the way of Stratford as #84s Hayden Barker sent New Zealand's
only female teams driver #11v Lisa Black high and hard into the wall, but by the time
#595s Rhys Wadsworth retired to the infield, Wanganui had shown great resolve and tactical
awareness to put an end to the losing sequence, as #66v Dion Mooney led the Vulcans home
to what was in the end a rather one sided victory and a quiet reception from the home
#15s Steve Behl and #818s Chris Hill were the quick ones in this fast and hard hitting
affair, as they opened a significant lead over the pack headed by #35s Neville Nolly.

A virtual re-run of the first, except that the quick two became the quick three, as
visitor #99v Richard Watkins (who recorded a dnf in the first) showed that he could live
with the pace of Stratford's top two.

A real gem of a race, with the result in doubt right until the end.
The early leader was #46s Paul Jamieson until he was sent spining by #818s Chris Hill, who
then had a toe to toe scrap with #15s Steve Behl, with both cars side by side for many
laps. Tucked in just behind the leaders was #99v Richard Watkins who waited for both cars
to drift wide on the marbles, before clattering his way up the inside and into top spot.
#15s Behl momentarily shook off #818s Hill and chewed at the back bumper of #99v Watkins
time and again until late on when #818s Hill, with an exact replica of the #99v Watkins
move a few laps earlier, barged his way up the middle when the leaders drifted wide.
