Memorial Night for Streetstox and Midgets
Report and pictures by Mike Pollard
Well I could have gone to Wellington for the
finals of the Std Stox Team Champs, but I was all teamed out. Instead I went to Stratford
to watch some racing! And I wasnt disappointed. The feature of the meeting was the Memorial
night for both Streetstox and Midgets.
Midgets Heat 1
#1NZ Michael Kendall was quickly past #99S Eric Beardmore and quickly managed to put half
a lap on the rest of the field. At this point Kendall eased back of the gas and simply
cruised round for the win ahead of Beardmore and #9S Tony Kroff.
Midgets Heat 2
#6S Neville Thompson was first away just ahead of #42S Greg Jones. Kendall started at the
rear of the grid, half a lap behind the rest of the field. 3 laps in and Kendall was up to
3rd as Jones moved in front. A lap later and Kendall was challenging for the lead. jones
did a great job holding out kendall, but with 3 to go kendall stepped up a gear and moved
to the front on his way to collecting the chequered again. 2nd was Jones ahead of
Midgets Heat 3
This time it was Thompson, #24S Neil Willans and Jones who put daylight between themselves
and the rest of the grid as Kendall decided to start this time 3/4 of a lap behind the
rest! Jones showed good speed and quickly shot into the lead only to develop a misfire,
and came coasting to a halt as the field swept by. This brought out the yellows, at which
point it was Thompson ahead of Beardmore, #22S Jim Dodunski in 3rd with Kendall up to 4th.
On the restart it was Dodonski who moved swiftly into the lead ahead of Thompson and
Kendall. 2 laps later and Kendall shot past the
two leaders as if they were standing still. At the flag it was Kendall with a hat trick
ahead of Dodunski and Thompson.
Streetstox Heat 1
#24S Andrew Dodunski was the first to show ahead of #6S John Young and #27S Paul Shodder.
Shodder moved ahead of young before the reds came out for #28S Steve Lewis who was in a
precarious position. On the green Young was swallowed up by the pack. Into lapped traffic,
and a problem for the leader Dodunski who was pinned against the wall for a time by #78S
Derek "Animal" Henderson, which allowed Shodder to take up the running to the
chequered ahead of a recovered Dodonski with Young in 3rd.
Streetstox Heat 2
This time it was Shodder who was first away, ahead of Henderson and #58S Paul Blinkhorn.
Both Henderson and Blinkhorn swapped positions a nuber of times before a red was shown to
remove a dead car. On the restart Shodder moved further ahead for his 2nd win of the night
with Blinkhorn confirming his 2nd spot ahead of Henderson finishing in 3rd.
Lewis was pinned against the wall in this one by #23S Harvey Edgecombe while young
together with #18S Stuart Cadman and Andrew Dodunski lapped the track comfortably to
finish in that order.
After the points were tallied, there required a run-off for the title which was headed by
#27S Paul Shodder and #24S Andrew Dodunski. It was no surprise to see Shodder move a few
car lengths ahead early on, and try as he might
