Stratford - 2 January 2005
Telstra Clear Limited Saloon Car Series

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

Hello and welcome to Stratford for an all round good night of speedway action.

The meeting was helped no end by the surprise but very welcome appearance of 8 or so Midgets who had travelled all the way down from Auckland to race, no doubt keen to show that their track is alive and kicking despite a closure threat hanging over them, even though it is one of the World's most historic tracks with a history going back 75 years!

Still, this is Stratford and we were here to witness the 4th and final round of the North Island Telstra Clear Limited Saloon Car Series. the by now very familiar 3x heat rotating grid format with a Super 6 Dash for the Cash to finish.

Heat 1
#48M Phil Towgood the Series leader was quickly away together with #5M Brent McClymont. there was very little positional movement in this race as the cars were getting used to the slick track. The exception was #77 Rossco Cresswell who was unfortunately going backwards! A broken gearbox caused early retirement from crowd favourite #13K Murray Guy who had only just come back on the racing scene following a ban for a licence infringement.

Towgood took the flag from Brent McClymont with #17M Tony Heuvell in 3rd.

Heat 2
#9P Mike Hermansen and #28 Owen Larsons were fast off the front and put a good lead on the rest of the field. Midway through the race #71M John McClymont and #63A Nigel Mouat spun together in turn 2 which brought out the yellow flags and bunched up the grid which allowed #5M Brent McClymont who had just passed #4s ash cook for 3rd to get in touch with the leaders. on the restart towgood quickly moved up to 4th and made it a 3 way battle for 2nd place as Hermansen had moved clear to win from Larsen in 2nd and Brent McClymont finishing in 3rd.

After the points were tallied both Towgood and Hermansen were level, clear of the rest going into the final race.

Heat 3
At the front early on it was #42P Allan Jacob and #21H Steve Williams who built a commanding lead but eyes were on the mid-pack where Towgood and Hermansen started. It was all about who could overtake the most cars and although Hermansen overtook a few Towgood overtook more!

The race was won by Jacob from Williams but Towgood had done enough for the meeting win and an overall series victory.

Dash for the Cash
Williams and Hermansen off the front but with the fastest off the back you could throw a blanket over all 6 of 'em for the first 4 laps. Hermansen started to pull away but then suddenly slowed and was hit by Williams. the 2 cars ended up stuck together in the wall. This brought out the yellows at which point Heuvell pulled onto the centre green, which left the 3 cars of Jacob, Towgood and Brent McClymont in that order. The cars of Williams and Jacob took an absolute age to untie, with the 3 cars left running eventually being brought to a halt. On the green both Towgood and Brent McClymont managed to get past Cook to finish in that order. Game, set and match to Towgood who managed to win everything on offer with some great drives.

The "highlight" of the meeting however was probably the spectacular crash of young Midget driver #27A Barry Brockway who was making his debut in the open class Midgets! A meeting he will no doubt ever forget!

The 3 x Superstox in attendance of #95s, #55s Aaron Wilkes and #282s Phil Ogle meant all-in racing for the stockcars.
