Rotorua - Friday 18 November 2005
Club Night

Words and pictures Mike Pollard

You just know when you're close to paradise, you can smell it!
Hello and welcome to Sulphur City, aka Paradise Valley Raceway for the first Friday night session of the season.
A club night tonight, which would appear to mean that anyone who is contracted to Rotorua is welcome regardless of the formula. The downside to this is that there are a number of classes running with just a few competitors, but the upside was the admission charge of of just $5 (2 quid).
Visitors are also welcome, which meant that we also had races for the visiting super saloons of #13m Murray Guy and #46e Patrick North who had come all the way from Blenheim on the South Island.

Superstocks
Heat 1
#62r Neville Stanaway was quick away whilst at the back #816h Wayne Lucey managed to get turned around but managed to rejoin just as #135r Scott Hewson retired. #6r Donald Catchpole was running second ahead of the Kihikihi visitor #15k in third. 2 laps later and Scott Hewson rejoins the fray for another half lap before retiring for the evening! Neville Stanaway still in front from Donald Catchpole with #33r Robbie Mabey now up into third ahead of the Kihikihi driver with #7r Dayne Wright chasing in 5th. Mabey forces Catchpole into the wall and takes 2nd as Catchpole loses another place trying to recover. #68r Peter Fleming spins, the Kihikihi driver retires, Neville Stanaway wins by a 1/4 lap from Mabey and Wright.

Heat 2
Fun at the start as #151r Mike Raynel, #6r Donald Catchpole and #33r Robbie Mabey all end up facing the wrong way before they manage to reach the green! whilst #62r Neville Stanaway makes the break again, leading from #7r Dayne Wright and #68r Peter Fleming as a few spots of rain start to fall. The rain gets no worse as Stanaway remains unchallenged and wins again, this time from Wright and Fleming.

Heat 3
Easily the best race of the night as #816h Wayne Lucey is first to show at the front as #21r Michael Francis attempts to scrape the wall clean! Lucey ahead of #7r Wright, with #62r Stanaway, #33r Mabey, #68r Fleming, #151r Raynel, #6r Catchpole, and #15k all in line astern. Lucey still leads as Stanaway forces his way through into 2nd with Wright fighting back for the position. Stanaway whilst still fighting off Wright manages to find a way past Lucey and into the lead only to be blocked by the lapped Francis and finds himself going back down to 3rd. Lucey back in front again as Stanaway moves past Wright and back into 2nd. Lap after lap these three are together as once again Stanaway sees something resembling a gap, and he's through once again to take the lead with Wright in tow as its Lucey's turn to go from 1st to 3rd. White flag, all 3 are in with a shout as Stanaway goes wide on turn 1, Lucey edges into 2nd, and going into turn 3 we have all x 3 side by side as Stanaway takes the chequered for a clean sweep of victories, just ahead of Wright and Lucey. An absolute cracker of a race.
