Ministox - Rookies - Special Rods
Ringwood - Saturday 12 June 2004

Report and pictures by Mark Baulch

We had plenty of entertainment at Ringwood Raceway on 12 June, with loads of cars action all the way.

The Ministox were competing in the second round of their Western Championship. There were 14 drivers in attendance, with the now accustomed handful of visitors from Spedeworth, Arena Essex and Autospeed. Vicki Brand 106 came from Spedeworth as the provisional pole position holder, but was to drop to fourth by the end of a rotten evening for her, culminating in her Mini being turned on its side in the final! Compatriot Daniel Wenn 132 started his evening in second place in the Western table and completed the first heat in this same position. However, that was to be his highest score of the evening, so although he maintained his position, he ended the day with just a
two-point advantage over Patrick Mongey 794. He had his best evening for a while, finishing third and second in the heats, before finishing second again in the final, ahead of Daniel Moulton 547 from Arena. This meant that he climbed a place to third in the overall standings. But the evening belonged to one driver. With plenty of speed and some use of his bumper as well, Scott Bourne 199 enjoyed a hat trick of wins, the points gained rocketing him from sixth to provisional pole. With two more rounds remaining, this is set to be an exciting championship!

Results

Heat 1    199, 132, 794, 547, 106, 748, 964, 704
Heat 2    199, 794, 704, 132, 748, 964, 547, 106
Final    199, 794, 547, 964, 748, 132, 772, 717

The Special Rods were also out to score points in their Western Championship round two. Carl Wheeler 317 was the provisional pole position man after the first round, but although he enjoyed a consistent evening, third in each of the heats and second in the final was not enough for him to stay there. The 17 drivers were certainly jostling for points as well as position on the track, as the Armco rang out several times due to spins and mishaps. Barry Staples 23 dropped to fourth overall as he failed to score after the first race. His place as third man on the provisional grid for the Final in September was taken by Len Styles 151, thanks to a good second place in the first heat and third in the final. But, as in the Ministox, the evening was all about one driver. Colin Moss 7 won all three races for his hat trick, stealing provisional pole away by 2 points with his final win.

Results

Heat 1    7, 151, 317, 181, 23, 159, 452, 630
Heat 2    7, 79, 317, 159, 452, 630, 302, 308
Final    7, 317, 151, 79, 159, 630, 452, 308

Then it was time for the Ringwood Rookies. With a fantastic 68 of them in attendance, we had to have two first heats, giving us even more fun! Racing was fast and furious, as always, with plenty of hits and cars retiring all over the place. Matt Nutley 80 won the first of these races, with Marc Le Beaux 387 the second victor. There were still 41 cars running for the second heat and remarkably they all managed to stay on four wheels! Sam Wyatt 299 found the fastest route through the increasingly large number of wrecked cars to take the win. Amazingly, some brutal mechanic work meant that 34 cars reappeared for the final, which was a bruising quick and destructful affair that only 6 drivers managed to finish! John Maddock 12 crossed the line in third, behind Martin Bowmaker 96. The final victory of a busy evening belonged to Matt Kirkham 426.

Results

Group 1, Heat 1    80, 68, 8, 12, 198, 299, 1, 377
Group 2, Heat 1    387, 270, 123, 137, 115, 617, 107, 105
Heat 2        299, 8, 198, 426, 387, 12, 215, 5
Final        426, 96, 12, 103, 25, 219

We shall then conclude this set of Western rounds this Saturday 19 June. The Ford Rods and Hot Rods are the last to run. The Junior Rookies will also return to continue their driving lessons, hopefully not watching the Bangers, as they appear in Under 1800cc form to contest the first UK Open qualifying round. Gates open at 5.00pm for the first race at 7.30pm. See you then!
