Grand Opening 2008/09
18 October 2008
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard
The new season started out with a familiar look, as #7p Shane Penn waltzed his way to
another maximum, with an incredible 3 x race victory.
His closest challenge came in ht2, when #64p Kev Smith came close to taking a win. #64p
Smith may have won but for a stoppage, and for some indecision when putting a lap on
newcomer #35p Michael Watts, before serving him a big one late in the race.
#7p Penn didn't have it all his own way in the feature either, as #10p Peter Rees pushed
him all the way.
"Superstar" visitors in the shape of #7b Mellsop, #19c Ngatai, and #515r Hickey,
generally failed to impress, with the best set of results from a visitor coming from #77w
Jordy Keene who was debuting after showing good form in the Stockcar class.
Special mention goes to #95s Clive Elliot, who most people thought was about to retire
after years of being one of the sports stalwarts. That was until someone wondered what
Clive might do, given a top line car? visit

And the reason behind the somewhat unusual signwork?? ....Raffle winners Samsung NZ very
kindly donated the prize to a worthy cause.
Clive experienced mixed fortunes on the night scoring a dnf (4 laps), a dns, and finishing
with an excellent 5th in the Feature
