North Island Stockcar Champs - Finals
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard

North Island Stockcar Champs

No major surprises with those qualified, except for the complete absence of Napier registered drivers.

Heat 1
#92p Brett Lloyd was first to get away at the front, as #517s Mark Wood immediatley had a mammoth task on his hands after being turned around. #10m Allan McRobie and #89w Dale Robertson were having a great duel for second place before #89w Robertson got past and then showed great speed in clawing back the lead of #92p Lloyd. Behind these two, the pack headed by #10m McRobie, #78s Shaun Bloeman, #15p Rob Miers and #18w Matt Gaskin were sorting out the pecking order, as #8m Scott Fredrickson was riding the wall at speed. In a superb race, #89w Robertson rounded it out by getting past #92p in time to take the chequered. The lap charts revealing the close nature of this formula, all 30 x drivers with the exception of #10m McRobie (who recorded a "faulty" lap time) recorded fastest lap times within 1 second of each other.

1.#89w Dale Robertson 2.#92p Brett Lloyd 3.#78s Shaun Bloeman 4.#15p Rob Miers 5.#98v Gerry Linklater 6.#77p Wayne Norris

Heat 2
#10m McRobie (who ended up 7th in heat1) was spun at the off, while #99r Shannon Orr had made the break at the front, before being joined and pressured by #46w Allen Levien. when the leading duo came up to lap traffic, it was #46w Levien who got through the pack quicker, together with #11w Michael Gray. The reds came out when a huge pile up saw most of the chasing pack collide and tangle in the fence. After the restart, #11w Gray was past #46w Levien for the win, with the chasers headed by #99p Scott McIntosh.

Heat 3
Only 3 points seperate the top 5 x drivers of #15p Miers, #78s Bloeman, #11w Gray, #92p Lloyd and #77p Norris, with a gap over the rest of the grid.
On the green, #86r Richard Keijzer was trying to forge a lead, as #31p Gary Davis was giving #52w Paul Fairbrother a wild wild on top of the wall. #78s Bloeman became the first of the top5 to fall by the wayside, as he was sent flying up the wall, and requiring the reds. #11w Gray was up with #86r Keijzer at the front, but #24s Tony Zehnder got caught up in the battle and ended up being pushed hard into the dead car of #52w Fairbrother, with the reds being needed once more. #11w Gray finished ahead of #86r Keijzer, both half a lap ahead of #15p Miers.

Run-off
#77p Norris had finished in third, but a run-off was required between #11w Gray and #15p Miers to see who would take the North Island crown.
Both drivers set off slowly, banging wheels together, then all of a sudden #15p Miers made the break and opened up what looked like a winning lead. Just when some thought #11w Gray would park up and wait for Miers to come past, he showed remarkable speed and within the space of a lap was within striking distance of #15p Miers ....... but only just! Perhaps a lap too early, #11w Gray launched himself at #15p Miers. #15p Miers was spun round and in the fence, but #11w Gray was on his side, with the bonnet resting on the #15p car. with both cars seemingly "dead", I was just wondering how this was going to be decided when, a car fired up and #15p miers thrutched backwards and forwards, trying to free himself of #11w Gray. With the front bumper of #15p Miers up against the roll cage of the overturned #11w Gray, one last thrutch from #15p miers, and to a huge roar from the crowd, the car freed itself and crawled over the line. As the guy stood next to me said "you could'nt have scripted it could you?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KodUD1kUNks

Superstocks

With the big boys away in the deep south chasing after the national title, it was an odd looking crew with visitors from Wanganui, Stratford, Napier and Rotorua joining in with #uk64 Kev Smith who was behind the wheel of the #59b Wally True car for a couple of races. The locals included #66p Tony Whittaker and #112p Shaun Pearson who together with a n other would not be lap scored due to running with non functioning transmitters

Heat 1
#66p Tony Whittaker quickly forged out a path at the front before taking part in a superb 3 x way battle with #112p Shaun Pearson and #33p Craig Rolsten. Further back #59b Kev Smith was making his way through the grid and spent a number of laps trying to get past #34s Peter Moseley. #33p Rolsten dived up the inside of #112p Pearson to take the win, with another fabulous 3 x way battle for second as #112p Pearson was spun just short of the finishing line, with the fast moving #61p Gary Trotter getting the verdict.

1.#33p Craig Rolsten 2.#61p Gary Trotter 3.#818s Chris Hill 4.#29p Roly Richardson 5.#45v Steve Guilford 6.#59b Kev Smith

Heat 2
#61p Trotter slowly built up a lead over #112p Pearson and #97p Graeme Ward with the rest a long way back. But the rest were putting in some great action behind as the bumpers were being exchanged freely.

1.#61p 2.#29p 3.#33p 4.#59b Kev Smith 5.#818s 6.#34s Peter Moseley

Feature
#61p Trotter was showing his superior track speed again, and pulling away from the grid. #59b Wally True was back in his own car and wasted no time in launching himself at #33p Rolsten and 29p Roly Richardson, with 33p Rolsten having to retire on the first lap as a result. #94p Royden Collingwood was back behind the wheel of a superstock, but pulled on to the grass on the first lap in Heat 1, failed to grid in Heat 2 and then inherited the lead in the feature as #61p Trotter took to the middle, before storming on to a great win ahead of the driver with the night's best set of results... #818s Chris Hill.

1.#94p Royden Collingwood 2.#818s 3.#52r Mike Herbert 4.#22r Wayne Talbot 5.#29p 6.#6b
