Palmerston North - 22 December 2007
$80,000 International Sprintcar Series

Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard

I don't know how many verses there are in the American National Anthem ........but I think we had them all!
Hello and welcome to Robertson Holden International Speedway Palmerston North, where Messrs #7usa Craig Dollansky, #10usa Ricky Logan, #18usa Jason Statler and #63usa Joey Saldana from the World of Outlaws met New Zealand's finest in Palmerston's biggest Sprintcar meet to date.
U.K. fans would recognise the format as 2/5ths.... with all drivers racing twice over 5 x heats, with the top x 12 progressing automatically to the feature.
#63usa Joey Saldana looked sharp in the warm up, but an engine fire in the pits looked to have scuppered his chances before the racing began.

Heat 1
#7p Brent Harris and #12c Glen Everett were first to show at the green, but before the 1st lap was completed; #7usa Dollansky had run over the back wheel of #1nz Jamie McDonald, sending them both crashing into the wall. Shortly after the restart #10usa Logan got tied up with #84a Kerry Jones which required the yellows when #19p Jamie Goodlass joined the party. #10usa Logan managed the restart, but both #84a Jones and #19p Goodlass were out. The race was starting to look like a demo derby when on only lap3 #56a Carl Wilson rolled requiring the reds yet again. The remainder ran without a stoppage as the first x 4 home were all close at the finish.

Heat 2
#63usa Saldana managed to grid following his engine fire, but clipped the wall on lap4 neccesitating the yellows and his retirement. #57p Mark Gapp pulled off a couple of laps later after being sent to the back, and the nightmare continued for the Americans as #18usa Statler retired 2 x laps from home. The chequered going to #75a Tom Rusher ahead of the quick looking duo of #21v Peter Huijs and #22a Dean Brindle.

Heat 3
#19p Goodlass led at the start ahead of #66m Skinny Colson and #84a Kerry Jones but #24w Halcrow and #9p Wade Savage tangled at the back causing a stoppage. On the green #7p Harris popped a wheelie and spun at the same time, resulting in an impression of a Da Vinci flying machine as the car tried to screw itself into the air. Eventually gravity prevailed and the #7p Harris machine fell gently back to earth. Up front #84a Jones was turning on the heat as he flew past both #66m Colson and #19p Goodlass before opening a gap over the field.

Heat 4
Yet another 1st lap stoppage as #75a Rusher ran into the wall, performing a spectacular series of flips.
On the restart, #57p Mark Gapp got loose, hit the wall and rolled. on the green the Americans finally looked to be in the groove, as #63usa Saldana hit the front ahead of #7usa Dollansky, but not before another stoppage, as #39p Brendan Lucas spun. On the 4th start, #63usa stormed round to a convincing win.

Heat 5
We managed this one without a stoppage as #9a Havard Daniels ran out the winner ahead of a sparking and smoking #11p Ian Easton, both some way ahead of #44p Peebles.

B Main
With the top x 12 pre-qualified, the rest ran in the B-main, with the top x 8 making the feature.
#27a Wakeling ran off the front and was looking quick until #7usa Dollansky made him and everyone else look slow, as the #7usa car cut through the field like a hot knife through butter after a bout of yellows following a spin by #39p Lucas.

Feature
The 30 x lappper was led out by front row starters; #12c Everett and #21v Huijs, with #21v Huijs taking the early lead with #18a Pickerill slotting into second. Waved yellows allowed #84a Jones to seek the sanctuary of the infield with a flat, with #59a Haigh and #27a Wakeling retiring at the same time. #21v Huijs still headed the field, with #18a Pickerill holding second from #10usa Logan, with 4th placed #11p Easton retiring on lap13. Up front #21v Huijs still led from #18a Pickerill, #7usa Dollansky and #10usa Logan. The final stoppage occured when #7p Harris spun on lap 21, after which all eyes were on #63 usa Saldana who was electric as he stormed through the field for a podium finish, from his grid16 start, with victory going to #21v Huijs over #18a Pickerill by less than 1/3rd second.

Superstocks

Heat 1
#591p Wayne Hemi was first to show ahead of #2nzp Peter Rees, with #5v Darryl Taylor and #9p Brett Hyslop running close for third. #591p Hemi caught a crab and was relegated to 5th, allowing #2nzp Rees to open a good lead over #9p Hyslop, #3nzp Shane Penn and #5v Taylor. #3nzp Penn looked blisteringly hot, but just failed to get his nose in front at the line.

1.#2nzp Peter Rees 2.#3nzp Shane Penn 3.#591p Wayne Hemi 4.#5v Darryl Taylor 5.#9p Brett Hyslop 6.#77p Wayne Norris

Heat 2 (all in)
#3nzp Penn started where he left off, and stormed into an early lead ahead of #77p Wayne Norris and #9p Hyslop who were battling for second of #591p Hemi and #8p Scott Miers. #591p Hemi was looking quick, and was soon through traffic, and pressing #3nzp Penn for the lead, before coming under pressure himself from #77p Norris, with 2nd place swapping between the two. #591p Hemi looked to the advantage, but came off worst when trying to put a lap on #5v Taylor

1.#3nzp 2.#77p 3.#97p* Graeme Ward 4.#591p 5.#8p Scott Miers 6.#61p Gary Trotter

Feature (all in)
The superstocks started in front of the Stockcars, but were effectively a lap behind. Off the front of the grid #2nzp Rees started the chase ahead of #8p Scott Miers and #77p Norriss. by the end of the race we had lost #8p Miers, but #2nzp Rees had made up the lap handicap, and went into the final turn neck and neck with the Stockcar of #97p Graeme Ward. a push, a shove and a squirt, and they passed the line together with the verdict going to #2nzp Rees.
