Palmerston North - 1 December 2007
Manawatu Superstock Champs
Pictures and reporting by Mike Pollard

There's always something new to wonder at on the seasons first visit to Palmerston, but I never expected a windmill! On track, #82s Paul Johnson from Stratford together with 2 x drivers from Wanganui joined Palmerstons' finest, including #4p Joel Pitcher and #591p Wayne Hemi who had both flown in from Australia to compete.

Heat 1
#31p Andy McCabe and #45v Stephen Guilford were 1st off the front, whilst the title hopes of #71p Kim Lace were over almost immediately as he was turned around, and started a heroic charge from the back. Meanwhile, up front #31p McCabe had started
to open out an advantage over #8p Scott Miers and #58p Peter Bengston until he came amongst lapped traffic, which resulted in a drop to 3rd. The lead changed again when #8p Miers found himself in trouble after tangling with #3nz Shane Penn, handing the lead to #58p Bengston. #31p McCabe fought back bravely and locked onto the back bumper of #58p Bengston just before the chequered, the resulting melee saw #58p Bengston inch the win from #31p McCabe, who crossed the line backwards, whilst
managing to fence a lap down #6v Dion Mooney at the same time.

Heat 2
#591p Hemi took his customary handicap by starting on turn 4, whilst the crowed waited a while for #8p Miers. Eventually we were green, with #95p Clive Elliot and #61p Gary Trotter being the first to show, before #3nz Penn and #2nz Rees fought tooth and nail for the lead a little way ahead of #5p Ward. #31p McCabe was turned round and #57p David Tarrant took a wall of death ride around the concrete, which would eventually bring out the reds. On the restart #3nz Penn edged ahead, and left #2nz Rees and #5p Ward to fight for 2nd.

Heat 3
Going into the last; #3nz Penn had a 2pt lead over #2nz Rees, #58p Bengston a point back in 3rd, with another point back to #5p Ward. Thanks to payback from last week; the hopes of #2nz Rees lasted as far as the first bend, as a huge hit saw himself and #6v Mooney on the grass thanks to #53p Kevan Roberts. #2nz Rees got going again, only to receive further attention from #53p
Roberts. Meanwhile up front, #58p Bengston and #3nz Penn were having a terrific race until #3nz Penn was sent into the dead #29p Billy Richardson car by a lap down #96p Stu Cooper. #58p Bengston was joined at the front by #71p Kim Lace who
managed to nip under #58p Bengston with a lap to go, to take the win, with #3nz Penn's recovery into 3rd, being enough to take the Manawatu Superstock Champs.
