Palmerston North - Saturday 1 April 2006
Finale
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard

The last SNZ meeting of the season saw the regular formulas take to the track, but with reduced numbers in the superstocks, many of whom were playing away at a big meeting in Napier.

Superstocks

Heat 1
It was #97p Graeme Ward and #77p Barry Lane who were first away on a quick but slippery track. #112p Shaun Pearson spent most of the race battling for position with #77p Lane, before getting the upper hand and setting off in pursuit of leader #97p Ward who he managed to catch and pass before race end.

Heat 2 (all-in)
Reducing numbers meant it was all-in for the stockcars and superstocks, with unusually the superstocks starting right in front of the stockcars. #33p Craig Rolsten and #66p Tony Whittaker were the first to battle for the lead, but the duo were quickly joined by #97p Graeme Ward who was moving through the field and up past #66p Whittaker for second. Mid way through, and #66p Whittaker loses time trying to lap #12p Lloyd Lampp in the Gavin Lucas car, allowing #10p Peter Rees to join #66p Whittaker in a scrap for third, while just ahead #33p Rolsten and #97p Ward were battling for the lead. As the white flag is shown, #66p Whittaker cements his third place as #10p Rees is spun by the stockcar of a lap down #49p Stephen Bleackley!

Feature (all-in)
A superb race this one, with #33p Craig Rolsten and #34s Pete Moseley up front early before #97p Graeme Ward simply drove round the outside of those in front of him and was behind leader #33p Rolsten as early as lap 3, and ahead of #112p Shaun Pearson who had also moved up quickly into third. Time for a lead change as the sideways #33p Rolsten proved too much of a temptation for a lap down #49p Stephen Bleackley who was begining to enjoy spinning the superstocks! This left it close up front between #97p Ward and #112p Pearson with #33p Rolsten recovering third spot after finally getting past #34s Moseley. White flag, just one to go and #112p Pearson launches a big hit on leader #97p Ward, sending them both to fence. #112p Pearson's race is run, but #97p Ward's lead is so large that he manages to recover and hold on to the win from a fast approaching #33p Rolsten.

Grand Slam (all-in)
The last chance of the season for some kind of payback, and thanks to #1nz Peter Rees driving his stockcar, the fans werent disappointed. #34s Pete Moseley was slow off the start and allowed #97p Graeme Ward and #33p Craig Rolsten to dice for the lead before #33p Rolsten timed a perfect hit on #97p Ward to take the lead. #1nz Rees was running third, but when losing the position to #112p Shaun Pearson, this seemed to be the trigger to attack anyone and everyone. #66p Tony Whittaker was as usual his first target, and this encounter became all the more intersting when #34s Moseley joined in the fun, with all three cars hitting and scrapping each other. #1nz Rees finally got the better of #34s Moseley and then waited for #77p Wayne Norris to come along, before shooting him up the wall and turning him over, requiring the reds. Up front it was #33p Rolsten, #97p Ward and #112p Pearson well clear of the rest. On the green and #112p Pearson rocketed around the outside of #97p Ward to take second spot, just as #1nz Rees takes out the leader #33p Rolsten, effectively handing the win to #112p Pearson, with #33p Rolsten recovering for third.
