Palmerston North - Saturday 4 March 2006
Manawatu Superstock Champs
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard

The first meeting of Autumn drew visitors from Napier, Stratford, Wanganui and Wellington, who joined the Palmerston North locals on a chilly evening to contest the Manawatu Superstock Champs.

Heat1
#77p Shane Penn flew away from pole with #31b Andy McCabe in tow, but after just 1 x lap the reds were out for #25p Doug Booth who found himself facing backwards in turn 4. 1 x more lap and the reds are out again, this time for #421w Paul Bouzaid who gets turned around and manages to wedge #97p Graeme Ward up against the fence. #77p Penn leads from #31b McCabe, followed by #53p Kevan Roberts and #56v Kerry Podjursky in close order. Well into the race and #53p Roberts gets in trouble, which allows #58p Peter Bengston to move ahead of #56v Podjursky who finds himself under pressure from #72p Simon Joblin and defending champion #61p Gary Trotter. Last turn, last lap, and #77p Penn struggles with a lap down #53p Roberts allowing #31b McCabe to nip past for the win.

Heat2
#58p Peter Bengston and #65b John Hynd lead from the off. 2 x laps in, and #71p Kim Lace storms through the pack to take the lead from #58p Bengston with #61p Gary Trotter running third. Toward the back #56v Kerry Podjursky and #34s Peter Moseley spend a whole lap knocking 7 x bells out of each other, culminating in #34s Moseley being perched up the wall, and requiring the reds. On the restart, and #53p Kevan Roberts finds a huge amount of grip and is up past #61p Trotter for third. Undetered, #61p Trotter stays on the case and wrestles back the spot before #71p Lace flashes past the line for the win.

Heat3
A quick check of the points shows, #58p Bengston on 53pts, #31b McCabe 51pts, #61p Trotter 49pts with #77p Shane Penn a further point back on 48. With all the main contenders starting near the back, the competition was still wide open.
#4p Joel Pitcher and #7b Shane Mellsop lead them out, but all eyes are on the back where #56v Kerry Podjursky does a great job in blocking both the #31b Andy McCabe and #77p Shane Penn cars. #77p Penn managed to overcome the block more effectively than #31b McCabe but immediately ran up against more of the same in the shape of #88p Dean Watts. Only a lap or so into the race and already the chances of #31b McCabe and #77p Penn looked to have gone! Red lights, as #34s Peter Moseley finds himself up the wall courtesey of #9p Brett Hyslop. Green flag, but only momentarily, thanks to #9p Hyslop again, as this time he takes out race-leader #7b Mellsop! Green again, and eyes to the rear again as #56v Podjursky once again turns his attention on to #31b McCabe, pinning him against the wall for a comlete lap, before #31b McCabe was sent up the wall by #9p Hyslop. Red flags again, this time to recover #7b Mellsop who had been hit hard by #4p Pitcher and #77p Penn amongst others before being stranded sideways accross the start/finish straight. Green flag again, as #5p Bruce Ward leads from #61p Trotter, #69p Roydon Collingwood in third ahead of #71p Kim Lace. Another lap down, and yet another red, this time for #88p Watts who finds himself stranded in the fence. The green is shown momentarily before the reds are out yet again to remove #53p Kevan Roberts who failed to re-start. One more lap and yep, its the reds again, for i think the sixth time, on this occasion for .....er.... #53p Roberts who had rather cheekily re-joined the race after managing to fire-up the engine in the supertanker. Last lap and white flag for #5p Ward, closely followed by #69p Roydon Collingwood who is just inches ahead of #61p Trotter and #71p Lace. Chequered for #5p Ward, the winner of a most amazing race. But we're still not finished, as at the back #56v Podjursky puts a huge hit on #421w Paul Bouzaid, sending him crashing up the wall.

Overall
After the points were tallied, the 1st time winner of the Manawatu Stockcar Champs was announced as #58p PeterBengston on 77pts. Tied for second are #5p Ward and #61p Trotter on 75pts.

Run-off
#5p Bruce Ward leads from pole ahead of #61p Gary Trotter, but #61p Trotter moves through on the inside of turn 4. Both cars storm round the track, but #5p Ward has to settle for 3rd overall.

Grand Slam
#69p Roydon Collingwood and #10p Peter Rees lead them away on a ROLLING START. #10p Rees takes an early lead with #72p Simon Joblin moving through for second. Meanwhile at the rear of the grid, #56v Kerry Podjursky renews his aquaintance with #34s Peter Mosely, by sending him up the wall yet again. #10p Rees still leads from #72p Joblin, #69p Collingwood and #61p Gary Trotter, with these four opening up a gap on the rest of the field. #72p Joblin gets half spun by #69p Collingwood, who moves up a spot, with #72p Joblin dropping down to fourth. At the back #56v Podjursky waits to give some more grief to #34s Moseley. #10p Rees takes the white flag ahead of #61p Trotter, as #69p Collingwood gets sent sideways by #72p Joblin. Still time for #56v Podjursky to taste more action as he piles into the #69p Collingwood car before the chequered flies for #10p Rees.

1.#10p Peter Rees 2.#61p 3.#72p 4.#33p Craig Rolsten 5.#54w Mike Pye 6.#69p
