Palmerston North - Saturday 21 January 2006
248 cid Global Challenge
Reporting & pictures by Mike Pollard

An absolutely fantastic day out started with a visit to a "museum" type display at the aptly named Barber Hall, as part of the tracks 75th birthday celebrations. In fact the displays filled 2 x halls and can best be described as better than anything seen in the U.K. as the exihibits charted the varied history of speedway in New Zealand over the past three quarters of a century. The day ended with another fantastic race sesion........support formulas that were top class, including the surreal sight of a brand new ice-bike complete with spikey tyres trying to set a new lap record after being especially shipped over from England together with a pack of top drawer superstock drivers that gave their all in search of winning the 248cid Global Challenge. Hello and welcome to the best stock-car track in the world!
#3gb Peter Falding, #13nl Ronald van den Handelkamp, #64gb Kev Smith and #97usa Ronnie Case made up the overseas contingent and were joined by no less than 7 x South Island drivers, together with representatives from Napier, Rotorua, Wanganui and Wellington, not forgetting the local top track experts from Palmerston.
Unfettered from the SNZ championship restrictions, its a case of all in together for 3 x mega-size heats.........whoever wins this is going to be a worthy champion!

Heat 1
#64gb Kev Smith starts this one at the very back whilst compatriot #3gb Pete Falding starts on pole and leads after the first lap from Bryce Penn racing as #77p, with #5v Darryl Taylor up with them in third. South Islander #19c Malcolm Ngatai is turned round at the back whilst #88p Dean Watts is first to retire from the race. With the grid count at a massive 38 x cars it's not long before the leaders are in traffic, which is a problem for #3gb Falding as he is overtaken by both #77p Penn and #5v Taylor. Two more laps and #5v Taylor is through to lead just as #53p Kevan Roberts in the supertanker gets blasted into the pit gate requiring the reds. A fantastic race ensues at the front with #77p Penn retaking the lead from #5v Taylor whilst down the grid carnage reigns with hits going on all over the place.

1.#77p Bryce Penn 2.#5v Darryl Taylor 3.#58p Peter Bengston 4.#591p Wayne Hemi 5.#14n Dale Ewers 6.#15v Morris Doyle

Heat 2
#48n Brett Nicholls is first to lead but is soon overtaken by #68r Steve Hampton as the nightmare continues for #19c Malcolm Ngatai as he is spun early on once again. Reds out for #55b Tony True who is embedded in the wall, as #591p Wayne Hemi retires to the centre green during the stoppage. On the green #3gb Pete Falding remains motionless and loses heaps of places before rejoining. Leader #68r Hampton gives #97usa Ronnie Case a taste of the his front bumper as he laps the american, but this slows him up allowing #48n Nicholls to lead again momentarily before #68r Hampton dishes out the bumper big style to retake the lead. All of a sudden the reds are out again as #10p Peter Rees launches an all out assault on #8p Scott Miers, sending him hurtling through the air, spinning, flipping and rolling all at the same time! Amazingly the #8p Miers tank was able to continue whilst #10p Rees retired after ending up perched on the wall. On the restart #9w Alan Levien failed to get going and was stranded mid track with cars passing on either side. After a few laps the inevitable happened and #9w Levien was hit by a pack of cars in a nasty looking shunt. Green flag, and #43p Darryl Hammond drove #3gb Falding to the fence and managed to wedge him there for a couple of laps before Falding retired to the middle. Start/finish straight, and #13nl Ronald van den Hadelkamp finds himself sideways and being pushed by a whole gaggle of cars into the retired #9w Levien car which had been left close to the edge of the track from the earlier incident. Up front #56v Kerry Podjursky had reeled in #68r Hampton and battled past for the race win.

1.#56v Kerry Podjursky 2.#68r Steve Hampton 3.#98p Craig Humphries 4.#5p Bruce Ward 5.#77p 6.#79n Brendan Higgins

Heat 3
Going into the final heat and Wanganui drivers filled three of the top five places with #77p Bryce Penn on 72points, three ahead of #5v Darryl Taylor, with a further five points back to #15v Morris Doyle, #56v Kerry Podjursky and #79n Brendan Higgins all tied on 64 points.
#64gb Kev Smith is on pole as #3gb Falding struggles to start, and pulls onto the centre before passing the starters rostrum. One lap down and its #5p Bruce Ward from #66p Tony Whittaker and #17n Carey Harwood. These three are clear as a huge pile-up puts distance between them and the rest of the field. #5p Ward shows his pace as he starts to pull clear from #17n Harwood with #66p Whittaker falling by the wayside. Into heavy traffic for the leader, as #5p Ward struggles to get past #53p Kevan Roberts, allowing #17n Harwood to get right on his back bumper. White flag for #5p Ward who comes under attack from #77p Bryce Penn (who's entire race has been taken up with fending of the attacks of #56v Kerry Podjursky), who manages to connect but fails to prevent #5p Ward from taking the win.

1.#5p 2.#17n Carey Harwood 3.#98p 4.#8p Scott Miers 5.#5v 6.#112p Shaun Pearson

Overall
A fantastic result for Darryl Taylor in his first season of superstock racing, as he becomes the first Wanganui registered driver to win a major championship since Vince O'Connor won the Grand Prix 10 years ago!
1.#5v Darryl Taylor 103pts 2.#77p Bryce Penn 100pts 3.#98p Craig Humphries 93pts best overseas 20.#3gb Pete Falding 32pts.
