Stockcar Teams Champs - Qualifying
Reporting & pictures by Mike Pollard
Palmerston North Pumas,
as holders, get to play host to another 11 x teams from around the country, to decide the
4 teams that will progress to contest the 2006 Stockcar Teams Championship.
The teams are split into 4 x groups of three, with points scored 100/40/25/20/10 to the
first 5 x finishers in each race, but with the winner taking the vast majority of points,
its all about who can take the chequered.
R1 Te Marua Terminators (Wellington) v Waikato Raiders (Huntly)
An easy win for the Waikato Raiders with #92h Blair Ashton and #95h Justin Hutchby leading
from the off and never really troubled by the inexperienced Terminators.
1.#92h Blair Ashton - Waikato 150 pts Te Marua 45pts
R2 Auckland Alleycats v Meeanee Maulers (Napier)
A close affair with most cars wanting to be runners, Meanee left it too late to stop #441a
1.#441a Andy Weir - Auckland 130 Meeanee 65
R3 Wellington Young Guns v Baypark Bulldogs (Mount Manganui)
#8m Steve Hermansen led for Baypark but the writing was on the wall as #21w Dale
Robertson, #41w Dave Marshall and #61w Paul Gaskin were all over him, leaving #41w
Marshall to take the win after #8m Hermansen was dealt to.

R4 Stratford Stormers v Rotorua Rascals
#203r Lance Aldridge showed his class by fighting off determined challenges from both
#401s Paul Walker and #402s Jay Knight. #405s Josh Hancock was rolled by #204r Steve
MacPherson, and whilst the reds were out #407s Tony Zehnder was towed off, seemingly
signalling the end for Stratford. But on the green leader #203r was spun leaving #402s
Knight to take the white flag for the greatly outnumbered Stratford team. The back of
Knight's car was dragging on the track slowing him down, which allowed blocker #201r Kevin
Henry to do his stuff whilst #204r MacPherson shot past to take the win.
1.#204r Steve MacPherson - Rotorua 165 Stratford 30
R5 Te Marua Terminators v Manawatu Steelers (Palmerston North)
#77p Gary Davis leads them away before the reds are out for #28w Rhys Greig who is turned
upside down by #76p Bevan Humphrey. Reds again as Wellington are really feeling the heat
as #87w Malcolm Ayers is rolled by #75p David Prescott, leaving only #91w Kyle Lane mobile
for Te Marua, and with the impossible task of stopping #77p Davis. The most one sided
match up of the evening.
1.#77p Gary Davis - Manawatu 175 Te Marua 20
R6 Auckland Alleycats v Palmerston North Pumas
#7p Wayne Norris and #4p Kerry Humphrey take an early lead for the Pumas as #5p Peter Rees
comes off worst after trying a huge hit on #81a Rodney Smyth. Auckland stuck to the game
plan, and in a skilfull display of teams racing, took a huge cheer from the massive crowd
as #441a Andy Weir took the win against the home side.
1.#441a Andy Weir - Auckland 125 Palmerston 70
R7 Wellington Young Guns v Wanganui Vulcans
#34v Gerry Linklater was first to show for Wanganui before being squeezed up against the
wall by #41w Dave Marshall. A moment of high drama next as #11w Paul wood retires to the
centre green with the car engulfed in flames. Undeterred, Wellington showed their class
and despite a last ditch effort from #49v Chris Annabell, #21w Dale Robertson was left to
take the victory.
1.#21w Dale Robertson - Wellington 160 Wanganui 35
R8 Stratford Stormers v Kihikihi Crusaders
#402s Jay Knight led from #62k Ricky Kuru until coming behind #91k Eddie Arthur allowing
#62k Kuru to make the running. Despite being 2 or 3 cars up over Kihikihi, Stratford who
had 4 x cars all on the lead lap simply couldnt stop the flying Kuru, who scorched round
for the win, and the biggest upset of the night.
1.#62k Ricky Kuru - Kihikihi 100 Stratford 95
R9 Waikato Raiders v Manawatu Steelers
#95h Justin Hutchby gets turned around at the start as #96h Lance Ashton times a superb
hit on #72p Justin Cunningham who barrel rolls down the straight as a result. On the
restart #76p Bevan Humphrey and #77p Gary Davis look strong up front for the Steelers. A
really viscious battle this one, with huge hits going in all over the place, especially
one delivered to #92h Blair Ashton, requiring the reds. Green, but red again almost
immediately as #75p David Prescott comes off worst after trying to deliver a huge hit on
#93h Kevin Ngatai. White flag for #77p Davis, but as he comes off turn 4 for the final
time, there are half a dozen cars blocking the track. Davis keeps his foot down as cars
are sent flying in all directions, as Davis crashes and bashes his way to the flag. A huge
cheer all round the stadium on the victory lap as Davis milks the applause after a truly
1.#77p Gary Davis - Manawatu 110 Huntly 85
R10 Meeanee Maulers v Palmerston North Pumas
Defending champs Palmerston, needing something extraordinary to qualify, look to be on
course, as after the first lap, #5p Peter Rees, #4p Kerry Humphrey, #7p Wayne Norris, #6p
Graeme Ward and #9p Scott McIntosh start with a 1-2-3-4-5 for Palmerston! The Maulers make
some inroads, but its still a 1-2 for Palmerston at the finish.
1.#5p Peter Rees - Palmerston 160 Meeanee 35
R11 Baypark Bulldogs v Wanganui Vulcans
With the Wellington Young Guns already qualified, there was absolutely nothing to race
for, but that never stopped Wanganui from getting stuck in and making this another classic
encounter. #8m Stephen Hermansen and #9m Scott Frederickson lead after lap1, but the reds
are quickly out after #49v Chris Annabell who tried to take out the leader, but ended up
somersaulting down the straight for his efforts. Another red as the #49v Annabell fails to
restart, whilst sideways on the racing line. Green, but not for long as #9m Frederickson
and #54v Francis Potaka come together which ends in #54v Potaka flipping spectacularly
through the air before crashing back down to earth. White flag for #34v Gerry Linklater
who is allowed to complete the final lap whilst the #8m Hermansen car catches fire!
1.#34v Gerry Linklater - Wanganui 145pts Baypark 50
R12 Rotorua Rascals v Kihikihi Crusaders
Minnows Kihikihi who won their first race, look to have it all to do as only 4 x of their
cars are fit enough to take on the full compliment of 5 x from Rotorua. Green flag, and
once again #62k Ricky Kuru launches himself off the starting grid and immediately pulls
away from the chasing cars of #203r Lance Aldridge and #205r Steve Axtens. 3 x laps in and
the inevitable happens as #203r Aldridge turns the #62k Kuru car around. A couple of
retirements from Kihikihi, and its 2 against 5 as all hope is lost for the Kihikihi squad
as #203r Aldridge takes the win.
1.#203r Lance Aldridge - Rotorua 150 Kihikihi 45
Nothing else on the bill, but with 12 x Stockcar Teams races, what more could you want?
