Leg 3 of the Saloon Car Speedweek

Hello and welcome to Palmerston for Leg 3 of the Saloon Car Speedweek, where 16 of the sports' top drivers compete over seven consecutive nights, in what is without doubt New Zealand Speedway's most professionally organized "touring event". The series organizer just happens to be Steve Williams, who is perhaps better known for being the caddy to Tiger Woods than for being involved with Saloon Cars.
2 x reverse grid heats followed by 2 x semi-final sprints to determine grid position for final.

Heat 1
#4s Ash Cook was swallowed up by the pack as fellow front row #42w Alan Jacob looked quick as he sped away to an impressive victory as a whole gaggle, including #112r Mel Hills, #63a Nigel Mouat, #21h Steve Williams and a late charging #48m Phil Towgood all fought over second.

1.#42w Alan Jacob 2.#112r Mel Hills 3.#21h Steve Williams 4.#48m Phil Towgood 5.#63a Nigel Mouat 6.#5m Brent McClymont

Heat 2
A race long duel meant it was close at the line as #28w Owen Larsen saw off the challenge of a quick looking #5m Brent McClymont as further back #48m Phil Towgood spent most of the race wheel to wheel with #10h Bryce Louden.

Semi-final 1
Front row man #112r Mel Hills fell back slightly, as #42w Alan Jacob, #48m Phil Towgood and #28w Owen Larsen fought closely for the win. Victory going to #42w Jacob ahead of #48m Towgood who won a photo for second despite half spinning late on.

Semi-final 2
Front rowers #63a Nigel Mouat and #17m Tony Heuval were quickly joined by #21h Steve Williams and #5m Brent McClymont, with all four trying to get their wheels in front. With one lap to go the pressure got too much for leader #17m Heuval, who spun, going from first to last, handing the win to #21h Steve Williams.

final
#21h Steve Williams managed to keep his nerve, and finish ahead of the charging #48m Phil Towgood and #5m Brent McClymont with front row starter #42w Alan Jacob finishing in fourth.

Superstocks

Heat 1
#66p Tony Whittaker and #8p Scott Miers locked antlers for the lead in the early laps until a fast charging #10p Peter Rees whizzed through. #66p Whittaker offered some resistance for a while, but before long #10p Rees was away and gone leaving 33p Craig Rolsten, #66p Whittaker, #8p Miers and 2nz Wayne Hemi to fight each other for second. late on #66p Whittaker slowed to a crawl baulking #8p Miers behind, which allowed #98p Craig Humphries to make a late charge.

1.#10p Peter Rees 2.#98p Craig Humphries 3.#33p Craig Rolsten 4.#72p Simon Joblin 5.#88p Dean Watts 6.#66p Tony Whittaker

Heat 2
Nothing much between the whole field for much of the race, as #33p Craig Rolsten led from #98p Craig Humphries, #72p Simon Joblin and #8p Scott Miers. #8p Miers laid a fair old hit on #72p Joblin to move up a place as leader #33p Rolsten spun on the last lap, giving victory to a speedy looking #98p Craig Humphries

1.#98p 2.#8p Scott Miers 3.#10p 4.#72p 5.#42p Robin Davenport 6.#66p

Feature
#72p Simon Joblin was the early leader until a hit from #10p Peter Rees sent them both crashing into the wall. This let #98p Craig Humphries through together with #42p Robin Davenport. #10p Rees slotted into 3rd ahead of #2nz Wayne Hemi and #8p Miers who were scrapping over 4th. It looked set to finish this way until the last lap when #10p Rees picked up the back bumper of #42p Davenport and in trademark style threw him into the wall at a frightening rate of knots!

1.#98p 2.#10p 3.#2nz Wayne Hemi 4.#8p 5.#72p 6.#29p Roly Richardson

All in
#92p Brett Lloyd and #31p Gary Davis fought at the front in their stockcars whilst half a lap behind #33p Craig Rolsten and #98p Craig Humphries challenged in their superstocks. #8p Scott Miers spun putting him at the back and #98p Humphries moved ahead of #33p Rolsten. #8p Miers caught the attention again as his car suddenly and without warning became enveloped in a huge fire ball, which was quickly seen to by the fire crew. #72p Simon Joblin fought his way through the grid and by race end had beaten the stockcar of #92p Lloyd into 2nd by less than 1/10 sec.
