Palmerston North – Saturday 16 April 2005
Tournament of Destruction II

Reporting and pictures by Mike Pollard

What do you do if the governing body pulls the plug on your formula?
Well if your name is Bevan Johnston you simply hire a stadium for the day and put on your own show!

Welcome to Palmerston North for the Derby Teams (Bangers, to you and me!) Tournament of Destruction II.
8 x teams from around the North Island gather to do battle for what is effectively New Zealand's premier Banger meet of the season.
6 x cars per team, with the winners having to battle through 4 x events means that any team wishing to taste victory will have to keep their machinery as raceworthy as possible, whilst destroying the opposition at the same time!
Plenty of good metal in the pits, with a number of Valiants on display together with the odd Oldsmobile and Cadillac.
Pride of place however, must go to Palmerston North's More FM Firecats team, who looked fabulous in matching Ford Falcons!

The awesome nature of this event, means that it is impossible for me to deliver a blow by blow account of the action. Suffice to say that the crowd was well entertained by some huge hits and some great racing.

Prelim Round
Wild Bunch Auckland beat Dirty Rottens Inc (Wanganui)
Terminators (Paraparaumu) beat Gala Caterers (Hawkes Bay)
More FM Firecats (Palmerston North) beat Team Kaos (Wellington)
Takapau Terrors beat Dannevirke Vikings

Quarter Finals
Dirty rottens inc beat Gala Caterers
Wild Bunch Auckland beat Terminators
Dannevirke Vikings beat Team Kaos
More FM Firecats beat Takapau Terrors

Semi Finals
Wild Bunch Auckland beat Dannevirke Vikings
More FM Firecats beat Dirty Rottens Inc

Final
Wild Bunch Auckland beat More FM Firecats

Both the semis were hard hitting affairs, with all 4 x teams giving and receiving major damage.
I was amazed when both finalists managed to grid a full race compliment of 5 x cars each! Although some of the cars were obviously going to be the blockers, there were still enough racing machines to provide for another all action affair. With little to choose between the 2 x teams the result was in doubt until the last lap, with the Auckland team proving to be just a little too strong for the Palmerston Firecats.
Congratulations to Bevan for putting on a fine show........ I didnt realise how much { was missing the Bangers!!
Rumours abound that Bevan Johnston is to take more of a back seat when it comes to promoting future events....... but as the guy has been responsible for inviting UK teams to New Zealand as well as organising the Kiwi team for the Derby Teams World Champs held indoors in Chicago, I can only hope that the rumours are unfounded!

Cars racing:

Derby Cars 51
Boy Racer/Jalopys 29
Saloons 15
Snr 1200cc Stockcars 12
Jnr 1200cc Stockcars 11
Quads 9 (demo)
