Manawatu Sidecar Championships

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

Well the clocks go back tonight, a sure sign that winter is on the way and with it a rare Palmerston outing for the 3/4 Midgets and centre stage for the Sidecar Boys.

Manawatu Sidecar Champs

A couple of preliminary races, together with the repecharges giving us a final Super 6 that would race 3 x times for the title.

After the qualifiers, the finalists comprised of 3 x local teams; #5P Keiran Payne/Bryce Ogilve #42P Steve King/Shaun Carter and surprise qualifiers #84P Shane Campbell/Chad Meads. 2 x teams from Wanganui in #2NZ John Hannon/Jason Wallis #62V Craig Scott/Rob Coleman, together the newly crowned NZ Champs #1NZ Nick Edmonds/Paul James from Auckland.

Heat 1
#5P Payne/Ogilve were dropped at the start as the other combinations jostled for positions. out of the pack it was #2NZ Hannon/Wallis who came out on top and led all the way, with #84P Campbell/Meads getting past #1NZ Edmonds/James on the last lap.

Heat 2
6 x abreast on the start line means that there ain't a whole heap of room, and as the tapes rose an even start meant it was 6 x abreast going into the turn! Someone had to come a cropper, and it turned out to be the swinger in the #62V Scott/Coleman combo that ended up being flung toward the wall. The #62V were looking to take part in the restart, but the referee decided that as the cause of the stoppage they were excluded.

Heat 2 Re-run
5 x abreast and a little more room!! #2NZ Hannon/Wallis were ahead and pulling clear after a half lap and put some distance over the chasers of #42P King/Carter and #5P Payne/Ogilve

Heat 3
A quick check of the points showed #2NZ Hannon/Wallis also known as Sally and Handbag (as emblazoned on their leathers) on 12 points, thanks to their 2 x wins. A full 5 x points ahead of 3 x other combinations tied on 2nd.
Tapes up... and yet again it was #2NZ Hannon/Wallis who were away. #84P Campbell/Meads worked their way up to 4th after a horror start but could not catch the #2NZ who were followed home by #1NZ Edmonds/James and #5P Payne/Ogilve.

Overall
1.#2NZ Hannon/Wallis 18pts 2.#1NZ Edmonds/James 12pts 3.##84P Campbell/Meads 10pts
