Palmerston North - Saturday 5 March 2005
Manawatu Stockcar Championship

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

The Manawatu Superstox Champs held over 3 x 12 lap heats (rotating grid).
With so many Superstox drivers registered to Palmy, this is probably the most important and hardest to win regional Superstox title of them all.

Heat 1
The cars lined up in drizzling light rain, with #10P Peter Rees and a resplendant looking (courtesy of a great signwriting job by Zoe) #77P Barry Lane on the front row, with #NZ1 Bryce Penn starting right at the back. On the green it was Rees who was away, and was soon joined up front by #15V Morris Doyle and #19P Paul Harris. The first to come to grief were #24P Russel Harrop and #98P Craig Humphries who tangled on the grandstand straight, losing lots of time. 5 x more laps and #6P Gary Parkes had moved his way into 3rd as Doyle latched on to the back bumper of Rees. The white flag and then the chequered as Rees crossed the line 1st just ahead of Doyle with Parkes holding on for 3rd ahead of the fast moving Penn who had come from the very back.

Heat 2
The cars came out. with the rain falling steadily it was decided that they would leave the track and reappear when (hopefully) the rain eased.

Heat 2
After a couple of support races, it was now or never for the Superstox as they took to the track and drove around for a number of laps to see if the track was raceable. As the rain was now falling quite persistantly the marshall asked the drivers what they thought, and they then proceeded to line up on the grid ready to race. One exception was #71P Kim Lace who took to the infield (Kim had scored zero points in the first race) and looked to be in no mood to go racing. Surprisingly the pit gate then opened, and the cars were ordered from the track. At this point the heavens opened and the meeting was abandoned. Typically, a few minutes later the rain stopped never to return!
