50 Lap Streetcar Derby

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

Palmerston North - Saturday 5 February 2005 - 50 lap Streetcar Derby

The feature of this meeting was due to be the Anzus (Australia, New zealand and America) Sprint Car Test Match. Due to the continuing noise pollution problems at the Springs Speedway in Auckland, this Series has now been withdrawn for this year, which saw this meeting "downgraded", with a corresponding drop in admission price, for what was now a meeting with the Streetcars a.k.a. Boy Racer Division, deservedly taking centre stage (after problems of their own) for the first time ever.

50 x laps divided into 4 x sessions, with 10 x laps each for the 1st x 3 with a 20 x lap "Feature" to finish.

Heat 1
1st away at the front of the large grid was #69P Brendon Drake and #49P Gareth Sinclair who took the lead from drake early on. As Drake was relegated down the grid #13P Aaron Syme and #97P Elvis Rowlands took up the battle for 2nd. Sinclair looked very quick, and at the chequered was 1/2 lap ahead of Syme.

Heat 2
This time it was #66P Jason Mather and #9P Shaun Mansfield who made the break up front before being joined by #88P Bruce Needham. Meanwhile at the back, Heat 1 winner Sinclair was 1/2 spun before Needham worked his way through to 2nd and was dicing with Mather for the lead. Into traffic and #16P Simon Williams had worked his way into 3rd which also allowed Needham to move ahead of Mather and go on for the win.

Heat 3
A red for #23p bruce jones as his car was trailored off the track with jones still behind the wheel, looking somewhat uncomfortable after a heavy shunt. the win going to #3p matthew lockwood ahead of #30p clinton schickra and #69p brendon drake.

Feature
Highest point scorers off the front meant it was #13P Aaron Syme on pole with #77P Jeremy Hoskins alongside. Hoskins dropped off the front early and was replaced by #88P Bruce Needham and #97P Elvis Rowlands. Quickly into traffic in this one and needham again used this to his advantage as he took up the lead. #66P Jason Mather moved into 3rd as the badly smoking car of Rowlands started to move down the field. However, Mather spun unaided, leaving #51P Rob Ryan to take the 3rd spot behind Syme, with Needham taking the chequered.

Points
Despite winning the feature, Needham's total was only enough for 2nd place ahead of Ryan, with the overall victory going to #13P Aaron Syme.
