Manawatu Sidecar Champs

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

Visitors from as far afield as Auckland and Gisborne for the Manawatu Sidecar Champs, helping to swell the field to a healthy 19 x combinations.
All entrants split into 4 x qualifying groups, with all riders having 2 x races with the top 6 x combos making the 3 x race championship grid.

Group1
1.#62v 2.#1nz 3.#42p 4.#11p 5.#52w
1.#1nz 2.#62v 3.#42p 4.#11p 5.#52w

Group2
1.#7p 2.#2nz 3.#97h 4.#77p
1.#7p 2.#97h 3.#2nz 4.#77p

Group3
1.#7v 2.#4p 3.#53v 4.#25p 5.#8a
1.#7v 2.#4p 3.#53v 4.#8a 5.#25p

Group4
1.#35v 2.#46b 3.#56g 4.#39a 5.#14k
1.#35v 2.#56g 3.#46b 4.#14k 5.#39a

Qualifiers
#7p Paul Ogilvie/Tony Hislop 10pts
#7v Les Plummer/Kevin Demanser 10pts
#35v Mick Paul/Paul Blinkhorne 10pts
#1nz Nick Edmonds/Paul James 9pts
#62v Craig Scott/Tony Herewini 9pts
#4p John Moxham/Bryce Ogilvie 8pts

Surprise non-qualifiers are defending champions #2nz John Hannon/Jason Wallis who missed out on qualifying by a single point, but with 3 x unbeaten combinations plus the #1nz pairing, the championship was looking wide open.

Heat 1
Not much room when you're 6 x abreast at the start but the 3 x unbeaten teams had to give way to #1nz Edmonds/James who found the gap to stake their claim as they streaked around for the win, whilst the fastest pair in qualifying #7v Plummer/Demanser were down in 5th. It really was wide open now!
1.#1nz 2.#7p 3.#4p 4.#62v 5.#7v 6.#35v

Heat 2
#4p Moxham/Ogilvie led all the way except for the last few inches, when #7v Plummer/Demanser squeezed up the inside for the win, with first race victors #1nz Edmonds/James back in 5th spot.
1.#7v 2.#4p 3.#7p 4#62v 5.#1nz 6.#35v

Heat 3
Going into the decider #4p Moxham/Ogilvie and #7p Ogilvie/Hislop were tied on 9pts each, and either combo would be crowned champions if they could win the final event. #1nz Edmonds/James stormed through the field to finish in 3rd, but #7p Ogilvie/Hislop never really got going and finished 4th whilst #4p Moxham/Ogilvie kept their nerve to win their first race of the day and the Manawatu Champs!
Moxham/Ogilvie celebrated by trying donuts, which looks really difficult on a sidecar, only for the swinger to be flung from the machine to the amusement of the crowd.

Run-off
#1nz Edmonds/James beat #7p Ogilvie/Hislop in a race that for some reason also included #7v Plummer/Demanser who had finished one point ahead of the other 2 x combos for a clear 2nd place finish overall.

Overall
1.#4p Moxham/Ogilvie 15pts 2.#7v Plummer/Demanser 13pts 3.#1nz Edmonds/James 12pts

Superstocks
Heat 1
A storming drive for #4p Joel Pitcher who led a fairly uneventful race from flag to flag, winning by half a lap.
1.#4p Joel Pitcher 2.#43p Darryl Hammond 3.#53p Kevan Roberts 4.#65b John Hynd 5.#61p Gary Trotter 6.#38p Sjoerd Dykstra

Heat 2
#4p Joel Pitcher is quickly away again, this time ahead of #53p Kevan Roberts and #77p Jonathon Richardson whilst #61p Gary Trotter and #65b John Hynd move through the pack into positions 4 and 5. #61p Trotter is on a charge as he flies past #77p Richardson with #65b Hynd in tow. Trotter looks to be really moving as #53p Roberts is next to be relegated. No such worries for #4p Pitcher as he is way in the distance and records his second win of the day.
1.#4p 2.#61p 3.#53p 4.#77p Jonathon Richardson 5.#65b John Hynd 6.#55p Fred Dykstra

Feature (all in)
The best race of the night as #53p Kevan Roberts is first to show in the supertanker, but is pushed hard for the entire first lap by #65b John Hynd which allows that man #4p Joel Pitcher to move up to third and then second as it's now #4p Pitcher's turn be pushed by #65b Hynd. The push must be working as Pitcher sweeps through on the inside of turn three and hits the front leaving #53 Roberts in a side by side battle with Hynd for 2nd, until Hynd decides to slam Roberts into the wall, resulting in both drivers losing a whole bunch of places, with #61p Gary Trotter first to capitalise. Disaster at the front for Pitcher when attempting to lap the #97 Graeme Ward, #17p Gavin Lammas "team" leaving #61p Trotter to inherit the lead. Hynd spins again putting himself out of contention as Pitcher flys round the track and manages to lay a huge payback hit on #97 Ward sending him crashing into the wall. The hit was too much for Pitcher who without drive retires to the centre green just one turn away from a strong finish, leaving Trotter to take the laurels.

1.#61p 2.#77p Wayne Norris 3.#55p 4.#97p Graeme Ward 5.#77p (JR) 6.#53p

Grand Slam (all in)
#53 Kevan Roberts leads them away with #77p Jonathon Richardson right on his bumper, and who manages to punt #53 Roberts into the loose stuff as #77p Richardson slips inside for the lead. This being the only move of note, as Richardson zips round untroubled in a very fast race to take the flag.

1.#77p (JR) 2.#53p 3.#97p 4.#25p Doug Booth 5.#77p (WN) 6.#32p George Frear
