Up the 'Dale, up the 'Dale, up the 'Dale
.............up the 'Dale up the 'Dale up the 'Dale .........
Yes the Barmy Army is here in Balmy Palmy for tonights match-up between #11p Peter Rees,
#17p Gavin Lammas, #32p George Frear, #77p Wayne Norris and #97p Graeme Ward wearing red
ribbons and representing the Stockcar Soccer Allstars! Their opponents this evening are
#49p Stephen Bleackley, #68p Mike Gaskin, #71p Justin Cunningham, #99p Scott McIntosh and
#991p Brian Barber wearing blue ribbons and representing the Stockcar Soccer Alsorans!
Looking at the team sheets, this was Man Utd v Rochdale, but isnt that the beauty of the
Basically this is a teams race but with a ball! In this case an Austin A30. Both teams
push the ball round the track, but the last team to touch the ball before it crosses the
start/finish/goal line is deemed to have scored the winning goal. The only proviso is that
the "scoring" car must have done a lap before pushing the ball over the line.
The referee blows his whistle and its green for go...........about half the field swerve
to avoid the ball! .. no doubt aiming to get their lap on the board, whilst Brian Barber
picks up the ball, takes it to the byeline/fence and pushes hard ........ have you ever
seen an A30 go so quick? Half way round and Wayne Norris is parked up by the wall
.....defending beautifully and doing a Norman Hunter on the attacking Barber! The ball is
forced toward the pole-line and is picked up by a Rochdale attacker who takes the ball all
the way to within inches of the goal line but stops short (hasn't done a lap?) and waits
to pass the ball. Trouble is you cant give a side like Man U time, and time was all that
was needed for United's star striker #11p Peter Rees to come charging in "studs
up" with an exceedingly hard tackle, rob the ball from the hapless dale striker and
blast the ball over the line!
Yet again Rochdale was robbed! But whats this? They're lining up again....... its only
half time, we have the chance to draw level and force a replay!
Second half ....and things were going from bad to worse for 'dale, as injuries were taking
their toll. However, as the ball was becoming more deflated it was becoming harder to push
and easier to fall over! First Graeme Ward had to seek attention from the physio/tractor
as he became wedged on top of the ball ......."obstruction ref " ......surely
that should have been a penalty? Then it was #32 George Frears turn to have fun as he was
turned on his roof as he was attempting to "play the ball".
Even with these setbacks the strength in depth of the United squad shone through as 'Dale
was reduced to a solitary player, United showed their mettle and sealed the game by making
Another sad day for Rochdale, but what a great advert for the game!
