Palmerston North - Monday 3 January 2005
New Zealand Superstox Champs (Qualifying)

Report and pictures by Mike Pollard

This is the big one. Qualifying night for the NZ Superstox Champs.

Okay here's how it works... the 71 drivers including Frankie Wainman Junior are divided into 3 groups, with each group racing 3 times on the rotating grid format (front, mid and rear starts). The 8 top point scorers from each group plus the 2 highest point scoring runners up qualifying for the 26 car finals the following night. Nothing like keeping it simple eh?

Race 1
Defending champion #1NZ Kelvin Gray on pole took the lead only to be overtaken early on by #6P Gary Parkes. soon after, Gray was spun and within 10 seconds went from 1st to last. #77B Shane Penn took the lead mid way through and went on to win.

Race 2
#55R Frankie Wainman Junior started 14th on the grid and was up to 6th by the end of lap 1. Up front it was #66P Tony Whittaker leading. A red flag saw Wainman restart in 4th place. 2 laps later he was in the lead when Whittaker took a massive roll which brought out the reds. Wainman took the win after the restart.

Race 3
#61P Garry Trotter was leading until a red flag allowed #337R Darcy Hunter to overtake and go on for the win. a new lap record in this race set by #591P Wayne Hemi who finished in 3rd.

Race 4
Early leader #41S Bruce Williams drove well until caught by the flying #77B Shane Penn. Penn had a scary moment when #6P Gary Parkes rolled right in front of him. The Parkes car catching fire after being righted by the track marshalls. Penn then pulled away for a good win.

Race 5
#55R Frankie Wainman Junior starting on the front row led from start to finish. Amazingly #66pP Tony Whittaker was rolled again, this time by #17V Rick Campbell.

Race6
1st to hit the front was #33R Robbie Mabey until the reds came out for a flying wheel which almost cleared the catch fencing. immediately on the restart #58p took the lead and went on to win.

Race 7
A classy win for #51M Rodney Wood who led from start to finish.

Race 8
#84N Dale Ewers led until being caught and spun by #119M Kerry Remnant. The pair slowing which allowed #74R Neil McCoard through to take the win. #55R Frankie Wainman Junior starting from the back finished in 8th place.

Race 9
#72S Simon Joblin was the early leader but could not halt the charging #591P Wayne Hemi.

Run-off
One group had a 3 way tie for 7th place which meant a run-off with 2 to go through.
An uneventful race saw #92m kyle fraser and #84n dale ewers qualify ahead of #135r scott hewson.
