Kihikihi - 16 December 2007
North Island Stockcar Champs
Pictures and reporting by Mike Pollard

Saturday afternoon qualifying saw the 100+ entry reduced, to give us the 30 x finalists for Sunday's North Island Stockcar Champs.

Heat 1
Confusion at the start, as #89r Paul Mabey seemed reluctant to take up his allocated 3rd row grid, and lined up at the back. The rule book prevailed; and #89r Mabey was given the choice of starting from his grid or being sent to the infield. #89r Mabey chose to grid, but within milliseconds of the start, found himself facing the wrong way, with the pack bearing down on him! At the front, #64a Martin Chestnutt and #74r Mike Hohneck were trying to make the break before being joined by #36r Mike Ranger. #64a Chestnutt started to lose ground, leaving the way for #48m Scott Gallop to join the leaders ahead of #18v Tony James, #3nzr Steve Axtens and #1nzv Gerry Linklater. A great head to head battle at the front between #74r Hohneck and #36r Ranger, saw victory go to #36r Ranger when #74r Hohneck lost speed late in the race.

Heat 2
The rule book prevailed once more, as #28w Rhys Greig found himself locked out at the pit gate, only to see team mate #22w Richard Gaskin lift the dust, as he stormed round the oval ahead of #95a Gary Lonergan. A classic race looked to be on the cards, as #89w Dale Robertson joined #22w Gaskin at the front, only for #22w Gaskin to shred a tyre before quickly dropping down the order.

Heat 3
5 x points seperate the top 5 x drivers, with #3nzr Axtens, #18v James, #89w Robertson, #72s Phillips and #2nzr Spanhake leading the order.
#36r Ranger, was doing all he could to ensure a Rotorua victory, as he dealt an early hard blow to the hopes of #18v James, before launching an even more viscious attack on #72s Phillips. However, the Rotorua challenge evaporated as #2nzr Spanhake retired early, and #3nzr Axtens was forced to retire mid-race with a very bent looking car. At the sharp end, #22w Gaskin led till half way, before handing the lead to #89w Robertson, who went on to take the chequered ahead of #517s Woods.

1.#89w 2.#517s 3.#22w Mike Gaskin 4.#86r 5.#168a Billy Neil 6.#48m

Overall
1.#89w-82pts 2.#18v-77pts 3.#517s-75pts 4.#48m-73pts 5.#86r-72pts 6.#74r-70pts
