Kihikihi - Sunday 5 March 2006
Stockcar Teams
Pictures & reporting by Mike Pollard

Another first for ROLLING START... A visit to the governing bodies' only dedicated Sunday afternoon raceway. Hello and welcome to McDonalds Kihikihi Speedway for the "Stockcar Teams"
3 X big names in teams racing, Auckland, Rotorua, and Waikato (Huntly) up against the team with homefield advantage, the Kihikihi Crusders. A straight knockout format to decide. First up it's...

Rotorua Rascals v Waikato Raiders
#205r Steve Axten and #204r Steve Macpherson lead the way for the Rascals and soon look to have the advantage over Waikato, and then a huge chunk of concrete is blasted out of the wall, as a Huntly car takes it's place, thanks to a Rotorua rocket launcher! #203r Mike Ranger caused the reds to be brought out when losing a wheel, but even this couldn't stop #205r Axtens from smoothly negotiating his way to the chequered.

Auckland Alleycats v Kihikihi Crusaders
#89a Grant Littlewood is first away from the green followed by #34k Lindsay Trotter. But in truth thats as close as Kihikihi got, as #89a Littlewood managed to avoid most of the traffic on the way to a flag to flag victory

3/4 place
Kihikihi Crusaders v Waikato Raiders

#96h Mark Powell leads them out for Waikato as #26k Allen Dunn takes a big shunt to the wall. Leader #96h Powell is held up for a full lap thanks to some superb blocking by #16k Robbie Sissons, but as everybody seems to be blocking with no-one running, the hold up does'nt really alter things much as #96h Powell keeps his lead. Next time round, and #96h Powell, this time gets blocked by #26k Allen Dunn which allows his teammate #16k Robbie Sissons to take the lead for Kihikihi. Kihikihi's lead is short lived however, as #16k Sissons is sent sideways and then rolled over by #95h Justin Hutchby. Superb team tactics from Waikato, who then virtually destroy the remaining Kihikihi cars as #96h Powell goes on his way to the chequered.

Final
Rotorua Rascals v Auckland Alleycats
A close start as #202r Ivan King leads from #96a Nick Krisnick until #96a Krisnick is taken out by #205r Steve Axten. Thing are evened up when the reds come out for #206r Richard Keijzer who is giving it a big thumbs down whilst stuck in the wall. On the green #202r King still leads but is blocked for a whole lap by #64a Carlos Chesnut. At this point its #204r Steve Macpherson who finds himself in the lead, and after another lap it's now his turn to battle with #64a Chesnut for the best part of a lap before deciding enough is enough, and launching the #64a Chesnut into the fence! Next up it's #12a Mike Stanaway's turn to try and stop the Rascal, and despite harrying him for a lap or more, was unable to stop #204r Macpherson from taking the victory.

Superstocks

Heat1 (all in)
It was a case of "all in" for the superstocks, as they started with a half lap handicap behind the stockcars. As the majority of superstocks were made up of the Kihikihi Kings team, fresh from their first ever appearance at the teams champs, it was no surprise to see #27k Tony Wooton and #28k Grant Mytton lead the rest of the team away from their grid. A couple of laps in and the #24k car clips the stranded car of #55b Tony True and goes leaping through the air, performing a triple barrel roll in the process, and immediately bringing out the reds. Unfortunately there was a lengthy delay as the ambulance was called on track, to treat perhaps surprisingly, the driver of #55b who had ovbiously fared far worse than the Kihikihi pilot. On the restart #27k Wooton continued to blast round chasing the leading stockcars as the reds came on again, this time for #99a Grant Littlewood who found himself in the fence. Green again, and #27k Wooton continued his fast pace to be the first superstock home.

1.#84s Hayden Barker 2.#27k Tony Wooton 3.#24h Rachael Burkhart 4.#68r Peter Fleming

Heat2 (all in)
#58k Steve Frost and #68r Peter Fleming lead out the supers but neither can again catch the flying stockcar of #84s Hayden Barker as #68r Fleming finishes first in the superstocks but second overall

1.#84s 2.#68r 3.#168a Billy Neil 4.#24h

Feature (all in)
#68r Peter Fleming leads #24h Rachael Burkhart in the superstocks with #29k Marty Brandt in third.
Two laps in, and #24h Burkhart spins, losing heaps of ground to #68r Fleming but managing to recover before losing the place to the smoking car of #29k Brandt. Two laps later and #29k Brandt retires the smoker to the middle before the red flags come out for #61r who is turned over by #99a Grant Littlewood. Another two laps, and it's #99a Grant Littlewood's turn to retire as a wheel seperates from his car. Green, but red almost immediately, to clear the track of debris and remove the stricken #24h Rachael Burkhart car. Suddenly, the leader #68r Fleming finds himself to be the only superstock left in the race, which does'nt prevent #441a Andy Weir from spinning him just before the chequered flag!

1.#68r 2.#441a Andy Weir 3.#99a Grant Littlewood 4.#11k Bob Russell
