LEGENDS - METRO BANGERS - RELIANT ROBINS - HOT FORDS - MINISTOX

Pictures by Dave Carter

The first big Bank Holiday bash at Hednesford and a fine meeting it was too.  The five formula 19 race programme ran very smoothly in most respects and there was some good entertaining racing from every class.

The big talking point concerned Derek Hales' very big crash in his brand new Legend and ex-Legend driver Chris Pye explains ...

"The car was brand new going into the meeting. The car did its job, however, with the driver only suffering a slight black out upon impact, and what seems to be nothing more than a badly bruised arm. He has vowed he will be back out at the next meeting in last year's car.

The damage to the car can't be seen too clearly from my photo, but it was hard to get a clear photo with all the people around the car for the majority of the day. I can tell you, the chassis is a write off, with all the welds having stress fractures in them. The back axle is also non repairable, all the suspension is bent and will need to be replaced. The prop shaft looks to have bent, the body shell was ripped away to help the recovery of the driver, the cockpit panels are all bent where the axle tried to move into the cockpit. The fuel cell was lucky not to have dislodged completely, but had broken its holding plates and severed a fuel line. All in all the best thing to do with the car is salvage the parts ie engine and scrap the rest.
