GOLDEN JUBILEE ROUND #4

That well-known weather-expert, Percy Sleeman assured my F2 driver mate that "There's no way its going to rain tonight" prompting him to put on the baldies and discard the rainwear before his appearance in heat 2. Guess what? Yep it absolutely ****** it down! He just scraped in the qualifying places and the racesuit is still drying out. There's a moral in the story of course, never ask an F2 driver to predict the weather!

Not so with the F1 drivers!  Now they obviously knew something that all the F2, Rebel and racefans did not because a quarter of those booked-in failed to arrive. While this was disappointing in itself I think (and I expect a lot of racefans would agree) that the seemingly lacklustre level of interest by many F1 drivers in the Golden Jubilee Tour is a real shame. There was - and perhaps still is - a real opportunity for some very special events in this tour to make the celebration something extra special but on the basis of the evidence so far the GJ will be remembered more for the special programmes, books and merchandise.

Now it has to be said that the weather did its level best to spoil things at Bristol, it was certainly the worst I have experienced at a meeting over the past 35 years, but I'm still glad that I went!  The things that saved the day for me were, visiting the track for the first time for the return of the F1s, the wonderful old stock cars and the fantastic turnout F2s. I left the meeting totally drenched after the third F1 heat at which point the meeting was abandoned and no-one could realistically disagree with that decision. All in all the event had a surreal feel to it and if there's any justice in the field of promoting then Graham Bunter will get another chance to hold an F1 meeting!

Whatever happens this meeting will be talked about for many a day, its just a great pity that it will be for mainly the wrong reasons.
