2.0 Hot Rod pilots produced an epic race to decide the Hertfordshire Championship at
Bovingdon Raceway on Sunday September 19th.
A grid of the formulas top drivers lined up under threatening skies and keenly
waited for the green flag to get the race underway. The rubber burned as the drivers
clutch started their Hot Rods in pursuit of the title. Number 70, Rob Dance lived up to
his late fathers reputation on the small ovals, leading the pack from pole and
fending off strong challenges from 43, Paul Wright at every corner.
The fray was joined by a very hard charging 60, Mark Paffey and the race very soon looked
as if this, in some combination, was going to be the winning card. The racing was close
and intense between the three talented drivers, with none prepared to give an inch of the
racing line to their rivals.
The Clerk of the Course was kept very busy during the action as 43 and 60 were involved in
contact during the race, and received black crosses from the Start Marshall, leaving their
final finishing position open to decision in this non-contact formula.
Back in the race 60, Paffey gave up on the outside line and finally got by 43 on the
inside to take up second. Further pressure to the front runners came from a rapid former
World Champion, 230 Dave Longhurst who had powered his way up to 4th and was looking very
threatening as the race headed into its closing laps. 60, Paffey overhauled 70, Dance
(without contact) and built up enough space between them to take the chequer ahead of 70,
Dance and 43, Wright.
A Stewards Inquiry was immediately called, with most fans assuming the both 60 and
43 would be docked places for illegal contact. However, after the Clerk of the Course
conferred with the drivers involved it was decided to let the result stand; making 60,
Mark Paffey the new Hertfordshire 2.0 Hot Rod Champion, with 70, Rob Dance in second and
43, Paul Wright in third.
There will be more stock car action at, Bovingdon (situated off B4005 Bovingdon, Nr Hemel
Hempstead, Herts, on the airfield complex) on Sunday, October 3rd when the Rookie Bangers,
Ministox, 2.0 Hot Rods, and Stock Cars take to the circuit.
